About Volunteering
The San Jose Heritage Rose Garden is maintained completely by volunteer efforts. Volunteers engage in a variety of tasks including weeding, clipping spent blooms, winter pruning, propagating new plants, and planting additional varieties. No prior experience is necessary, as volunteer garden supervisors provide all needed training for newcomers.
How to Get Involved
If you're interested in volunteering in the Heritage Rose Garden or other areas of Guadalupe River Park Conservancy, please contact the Guadalupe River Park Conservancy's Volunteer Coordinator by email or by phone at 408-298-7657.
Regular Volunteer Workdays
We hold regular volunteer workdays every Saturday from 8:30 to 11:30 am, weather permitting. Please bring a hat and drinking water for your comfort during these sessions. Don't worry about equipment—we'll supply bypass hand shears and gloves if you need them. Volunteers meet by the nursery and shed, where you'll find others gathering tools from the tool shed. Convenient parking is available in the parking lot on Seymour Street.
Pruning Schedule
Our pruning activities follow the natural cycle of rose varieties throughout the year. Once-bloomer pruning takes place in July and early August, while winter pruning begins with Tea roses in November and continues with modern roses through mid to late February.
Public Pruning Lessons
We offer public pruning lessons starting in early January through February. These educational sessions begin promptly at 8:30 AM and continue until 11:30 AM. Please note that due to the structured nature of these lessons, we cannot accommodate late arrivals.
